Group sues Health Net over mental health cover

by Staff Writers
May 3, 2004

The consumer group Foundation for Taxpayer & Consumer Rights has cited a California mental health benefits parity law in a lawsuit seeking to force Health Net Inc. to expand its coverage.

The lawsuit, filed April 26, claims Health Net improperly denied coverage to several state workers by narrowly defining ''medical necessity,'' said Harvey Rosenfeld, an FTCR activist and attorney.

A spokesman for Health Net, who had not yet seen the suit, said: ''Based on our record of providing access to mental health, we can only assume that this is more of the political grandstanding we have come to expect from FTCR.''
